KDP currently lets you create up to 2 titles per book format each week and submit up to 2 new titles per format each week. The week resets every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. Below is what that means for a single book, a series and a bundle, and how I would plan around it.
What is the KDP weekly title limit?
KDP’s help page “Create a Book” says: “Up to 2 titles per book format each week.” It sets two separate limits, one on creating titles and one on submitting them for publication, and each is 2 per format per week (KDP help: Create a Book).
Check that page before you plan anything. KDP can change this rule at any time, and I can’t promise it stays the same.
What counts toward the limit, and what doesn’t?
KDP’s page says a title counts toward the submission limit the first time you submit it for publication, “This includes titles previously saved as drafts.” So a draft you made last month still uses up one of your two the week you finally submit it.
Updates are different: “Updates to titles you’ve already submitted do not count against the weekly submission limit.” Fixing a typo, replacing a cover or changing a description on a book that is already submitted does not use a slot. Some details are locked once a book is published, so check KDP’s page on updating book details before you rely on a fix.
Does the limit apply to each format?
Yes. KDP’s page says the limits apply to each format (ebook, paperback and hardcover) separately. In a week you could create two ebooks, two paperbacks and two hardcovers. An ebook and the paperback of the same book are two titles in KDP’s count, one in each format.
When does the week reset?
Every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. In some time zones that is Saturday evening, in others Sunday morning, so check the time in your own zone before you try to squeeze a submission in at the end of the week.
How do I plan a series release around the limit?
For most authors the limit is not a problem, because few of us finish more than two books a week. It matters when you have a backlog or a series ready to go.
- Count by format. If you want ebook and paperback of every book, a series of six books is 12 titles, and at two per format per week that is three weeks of submissions.
- Don’t create drafts you can’t finish. KDP counts a draft when you first submit it, and the creation limit also caps how many new titles you can start in a week.
- Put the books you most want live first. Submit book one in each format before books two and three.
- Leave room for fixes. Updates to submitted titles don’t count, so you can fix problems without losing a slot.
- Think about whether a series should go out all at once or one by one. That is a marketing choice as much as a KDP one. I cover it in one book or a trilogy.
What isn’t clear from KDP’s page?
KDP’s help page does not say what happens to a submission that goes over the limit. If you hit the limit, wait for the Sunday reset and try again, and ask KDP support if the message doesn’t make sense.
