Can You Use Canva for a KDP Book Cover?

Can You Use Canva for a KDP Book Cover?

Yes, you can make a KDP book cover in Canva, but Canva being allowed is not the whole question. KDP holds you responsible for the rights to everything on the cover, and the cover has to meet KDP’s file specs and sell the book. Below: what to check on the licence, what KDP requires, how to adapt a template safely and when a homemade cover costs you sales.

Are Canva elements safe to use on a KDP cover?

Mostly, if you build your own design from them. Canva’s own licence pages refused to load for me from the server I work on (they returned an access error), so I can’t quote them directly. Please read Canva’s current Content License Agreement yourself before you publish. The most careful summary I could open is a Trademarkia article dated 30-Mar-26, which says Canva-created designs can usually be used on KDP covers if you follow Canva’s licence, that print-on-demand sales are allowed but “you must create a unique design”, and that you can’t “resell or redistribute unaltered Canva media” (Trademarkia). It also says you can’t claim exclusive rights over Canva’s stock media.

That last point is the one people miss. A licence to use an element is not ownership of it. Other authors can license the same stock photo and the same Canva template, so a cover that is mostly one unaltered element can end up looking like someone else’s book.

What does KDP say about rights to images on my cover?

KDP says authors, publishers and selling partners are responsible for making sure their content does not violate “copyright, trademark, brand, privacy, publicity, or other rights”, and that it will “reject or remove content that does not adhere to these guidelines” (KDP content guidelines). KDP also says the cover image must meet its specifications and that you need all rights to the cover content (KDP ebook cover criteria).

In practice that means:

  1. Check the licence of every photo, illustration and font on the cover, not only the Canva ones.
  2. Leave out anything that shows a brand, a logo or a recognisable person.
  3. Keep a note of where each element came from, so you can answer if KDP asks.

What file does KDP want from Canva?

It depends on the format.

  • Paperback. One PDF with the back cover, spine and front cover as a single image, at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI, with 0.125 inch (3.2 mm) of bleed on the top, bottom and outside edges (KDP paperback cover requirements). The cover text must match the title, author name and edition you entered in KDP.
  • Ebook. A JPEG or TIFF. The ideal size is 2,560 pixels high by 1,600 wide, the minimum is 1,000 by 625, and the file must be under 50 MB (KDP ebook cover criteria).

I did not test Canva’s export settings against these specs, so check your exported file against the list above before you upload. The spine width depends on your page count and paper, so a paperback cover built before the book is finished is usually wrong.

What should I change in a Canva template?

Change enough that it is your design. Replace the main image, the colours and the fonts, rework the layout, and write your own title and subtitle. If you can find the same layout on another author’s book, yours needs more changes.

Do not buy or copy a template and publish it with only the title swapped. That is the case the Trademarkia article warns about, and it is also a weak cover, because readers can’t tell it apart from the next one.

When does a homemade cover hurt sales?

When it does not look like the books readers already buy in your sub-genre. A cover is the second most important marketing piece after the title, and readers who see a cover unlike the best sellers assume the book is not for them. I go through that in what you need to know about covers.

A simple test: put your cover as a small thumbnail beside the top ten books in your sub-genre. If you can’t read your title at that size, or it looks like a different kind of book, fix it before you publish. If you would rather hand the cover off, using Fiverr for book covers covers what to check when you hire a designer.

Can I use the same Canva cover for print and ebook?

Not as one file. The front cover can be the same artwork, but the paperback needs a full wrap with back cover, spine and bleed, and the ebook needs only the front. I cover this in can authors use the same cover for print and ebook.

Where can I get help with the cover?

If you have a finished Kindle cover and need the print version, I turn it into a print-ready wrap cover with the barcode, back-cover blurb and spine text, and deliver it as a PDF. You can order print cover formatting for $20 on my publishing services page.
